It’s the perfect sofa! And it was the perfect height to your old coffee table, but now you’re finding that it’s coming up just a little bit short… Don’t panic!

There’s a couple of things that you can do to make your sofa higher, without having to compromise on comfort or design. It’s not uncommon for people to, suddenly or gradually, require a higher sofa. If you’ve suffered an injury, a higher sofa is a lot easier to get in and out of. Or perhaps if you’re just too tall for the sofa. There are many reasons why you would want to make your sofa higher. And many solutions to the problem too!

When you’re making the decision on how to make your sofa higher, you’ll have to consider the type of sofa, the current legs of your sofa and how many inches higher you would like to make the sofa.

Furniture Risers

If your sofa legs aren’t wheeled, then furniture risers are probably the easiest and most inexpensive solution. They are used to raise the height of tables, sofas, chairs and beds and are most commonly available in heights of 2 to 5 inches. So if you need to raise your sofa height by just a couple of inches, risers are a great solution without having to remove the existing sofa legs – they just slot right in! – so you can raise the height of the sofa temporarily only when you need to.

Standard risers can be a little cheap and ugly looking, and this is what usually deters people from buying them. But you can attach a matching sofa skirt to the bottom of the sofa to conceal the risers. Or, better yet, you can buy risers in steel or wooden finishes to complement the style of your sofa and avoid using the cheap, black, plastic ones!

New Sofa Legs

You’ll find that many sofa legs simply just screw in, so exchanging sofa legs is as easy as swapping them over! You may have to search around for some spare sofa legs that will fit your sofa properly, and sofa manufacturers often have spare sofa legs that they can sell separately. Some home improvement stores sell sofa legs in all sorts of styles, sizes and heights so you can find some that match your existing sofa legs. Or even have them custom made!

Taller Cushions

If you need to raise your sofa height just a little bit, you could always buy new seat cushions that come up just a little bit taller than the existing ones. Not all sofa cushions are replaceable, but if yours are then this is definitely worth considering. Remember that your old sofa cushion covers probably aren’t going to fit your taller cushions, so you may have to find a match for your sofa upholstery.

Raised Platform

A raised platform can be a very dramatic way of adding height to your sofa, creating a focal point of the room and drawing attention to the sofa. So if you have a particularly stylish sofa that you want to highlight in the living room, a raised platform for the sofa can make the sofa higher but also be used as a signature piece. The raised platform can be carpeted to further accent the area, like you would with a rug.

Casters

For those who move their sofa around frequently, casters also come with the added benefit of mobility. You can also gain quite a bit of height with casters, as you can get casters that are over 5 inches in height, and come in various styles to suit your furniture and decor. Whether you’re just looking for a cheap solution, or something a little more aesthetically pleasing. Many casters also have a locking feature so that you can lock the casters into place so that they don’t accidentally slide on the floor.

  1. My existing sofa plinths are Hard Wood, 200 lg x 80 wd x 60 high.
They are fixed to the frame by two allen bolts, centered length ways and 55 off each short side.
The height of the seat above floor is 350.
Could I get higher plinths, say 150 thus raising the seat by 90 millimeters?
I can send pics if required.
