Bunk Beds for Kids are usually two beds stacked one on top of another. Generally most bunk beds are made to standard sizes (2 x 3ft single size beds). However, recently different styles have emerged including 3 sleeper or trio bunk beds (usually a small double size bed on the bottom with a single size on top) or special sizes which come in a selection of widths and lengths.
Bunk Beds are usually used for bedrooms where children share a room and are popular with colleges, schools, hotels, hostels, prisons and university residences. Created from either wood or metal, bunk beds are the perfect solution where space is limited.
To help choose the right bunk bed for your child we have compiled a useful guide of 5 points that will help you make the right choice when purchasing your bunk bed.
Top 5 – Buying Bunk Beds For Kids
Point 1: Bunk Bed Safety
When purchasing bunk beds for kids it is important to ensure it is safe, one way of checking is to make sure the bunk bed conforms to the british safety standard (Currently BS EN 747:1993). For more information we recommend that you visit the following website: http://www.consumeradvice.net/pages/safety.htm#bunk
Point 2: Choosing The Correct Bunk Bed Size
Firstly make sure you measure the space in which the bunk bed will be situated, is there enough room on one side of the bunk bed for a child to safely climb up if there is a ladder? Do you have enough head room for a child to sleep on the top bunk without sitting up and banging his or her head against the ceiling? Once you have measured, you can either choose a standard size bunk bed (usually slightly larger than a single size bed frame in width and length), a 3 sleeper bunk bed with a small double size bed on the bottom and single size on top where space is not an issue, or thirdly some bunk beds can be made to special sizes. An example of this is our Special Size Pine Bunk Bed which is available in 2 widths and 4 lengths!
Point 3: Choosing The Correct Bunk Bed Mattress
Find out what size mattress the bunk bed takes, standard size bunk beds will fit 3ft single size mattresses. If the bunk bed is intended for use by a child then we always recommend our Edinburgh mattress, its versatile, comfortable and affordable. If the bunk bed is to be used by an adult then we recommend either the Edinburgh or the Opal mattress (an open coil deep hand tufted mattress built to source 5 quality making it suitable for contract use).
Point 4: Bunk Bed Assembly
Assembly can possibly be quite tricky, we always recommend that you assemble a bunk bed with another person to avoid injury to yourself or anyone else. Most companies will offer an assembly service, better leave it to the experts!
Point 5: Bunk Bed After Use
Lets face it sooner or later your kids will out grow their bunk bed. Unlike conventional beds, they soon become obsolete, why not think ahead and purchase a bunk bed which is available to be split as two separate beds.
